Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi ( The Iron Lady ) (born November 19, 1917 – 31 October 1984) was the Prime Minister of the India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. Born on in an illustrious family, she was perhaps destined for an illustrious political career. Smt. Indira Gandhi was the daughter of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. She attended the University of Oxford in Britain, where she studied history, political science and economics. As the Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi was well known for her political ruthlessness and extraordinary centralization of power. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
